Parliaments’ Role in the European Union Integration Process

“The Role of the Assembly in the Process of Albania’s Integration into the EU” was the next debate forum organized by the Institute of Political Studies (ISP). During the debate, the deputy speaker of the Assembly, Ms. Ermonela Felaj, the president of the European Integration Commission, Ms. Jorida Tabaku, MP Erisa Xhixho and Belind Kelliçi, former foreign minister Ditmir Bushati, etc. contributed with their interventions. The meeting was greeted by the ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Mr. Reinout Vos.

Researcher Altin Gjeta, ISP expert, presented the main findings of the policy paper regarding the role, balance and challenges of the Albanian parliament for a more active and institutional role in the integration process. Participants were diplomats, experts, representatives of institutions, civil society and the media.

During the meeting, concrete aspects of the parliamentary activity in the integration process were discussed, the positive experience of other countries was brought up, critical issues related to weaknesses in the implementation of the essential parliamentary function in the legislative process, parliamentary supervision and the missing control of executive power, as well as related to the elements of political will, institutional approach and consultations with civil society, interest groups and the public.
