Regional conference on good neighbourly relations and institutional performance in the EU integration process

The Kosovo Law Institute (KLI), in cooperation with the Center for the Study of Democracy and Governance (CSDG) and SCOOP Macedonia, organized a regional conference on good neighbourly relations and institutional performance in the EU integration process. The discussion brought together civil society representatives, experts, and public institutions. Participants emphasized that European integration is a continuous process, extending even beyond formal accession, with good neighbourly relations now set as a key condition to avoid importing unresolved issues into the EU. It was also noted that political parties often shape how citizens perceive and engage with neighbourly relations, while the lack of effective connectivity in the region further reinforces divisions.

Participants discussed how prolonged procedures, shifting political dynamics, and the role of bilateral issues have contributed to uncertainty, declining public trust, and enlargement fatigue, creating a gap between technical processes and citizens’ expectations. The discussion underscored that advancing EU integration requires consistent implementation of commitments, constructive political discourse, and stronger regional cooperation. This conference also marked the conclusion of the three regional workshops implemented within the framework of the project, which will result in a policy document highlighting regional gaps and opportunities to advance progress and cooperation in relation to EU Cluster 1.

The project is supported by the Western Balkans Fund and aims to build a more coordinated regional approach to advancing reforms under EU Cluster 1
